Alexander, Paris (Sculpture)

"I carve in the direct manner, meaning that I rarely start with a set idea. Stone in and of itself has such varied dispositions of color, overall shape and even density that I feel compelled to match wits with it rather than insult it with total preconceptions. I am, however, a classicist by nature and subsequently I am drawn towards figurative representations albeit at times highly abstracted ones." - Paris Alexander

Dr. Lawrence J. Wheeler, director of the North Carolina Museum of Art, stated that "Paris uses the human form as his subject frequently in carved stone, but also in clay and hard plaster. He expresses himself equally well in all these materials. In fact these varied elements contribute to the power of his art."

Paris Alexander was born and raised in New York City where he studied art since early childhood. Alexander's numerous exhibitions include the Museum of World Cultures at UNC-Wilmington, Duke University, and the Fayetteville Museum of Art. His public commissions can be found across the state. His work is included in the collections of Saks Fifth Avenue, SAS Institute, former President Bill Clinton, Senator Bob Dole, and many others.

Paris is also a well-known instructor in sculpture, drawing, and anatomy for the artist. Besides teaching privately, he has been an instructor at several NC Arts councils, the Artspace Arts Program, and the NC Museum of Art Outreach Program.
